Adams County Ohio Photos

Adams County is a very rural area in South Central Ohio. Dotted with small towns, hills, and forest areas. The county is the first of my 88 Ohio County project. I hoped to photograph the Great Serpent mound there, but it was closed for the winter. If you ever want to visit check the state parks listings for their times of operation.

The narrow area in the Ohio River at Manchester, Ohio was well known by pioneers as a dangerous spot because the Indians could easily attack from the close shores. You can feel the history in this rugged hilly area of Ohio.

The courthouse in the Adams County Seat of West Union, Ohio is s simple, but elegant old structure in the downtown square.

It seemed that everywhere I went the properties were fenced, with very few animals to need the fence. I guess that the property owners want to ensure their privacy, but it leads the mind to wonder the mystery, "What is going on back there that they need all this fence?" No trespassing yard signs were very common. Quite a few of the properties had these gently flowing mineral springs that flowed for miles downhill to larger streams.

Books on Adams County can be found here along with books on the Serpent Mound.
